A recent study by UCLA’s Center on Everyday Lives and Families (CELF) unearthed research proving that clutter has an effect on our mood and self-esteem. In women, there was a link between high stress levels and a high density of household objects. Women also associated a tidy home with a happy and successful family. Here are 6 great tips to help de-clutter and de-stress.
- Adopt the Rule of 5. Every time you get up or walk through a room, put away five things. Another option is to spend five minutes each hour to de-cluttering. At the end of the day, you’ll have cleaned for an hour.
- Pledge to clear and clean the kitchen sink every day. It only takes a few more seconds to place a dish int he dishwasher than dump it in the sink. A sink full of dishes raises anxiety levels, and a clean sink will instantly raise your spirits.
- Return to yesteryear when only photos of ancestors or wedding earned a place on the shelf. Put snapshots in a family album, which will immediately de-clutter many flat surfaces, or keep them hung on the wall instead of on a shelf.
- Unburden your refrigerator door. Researchers found a correlation between the number of items stuck on the fridge door and the amount of clutter throughout the house. Toss any extra magnets and file restaurant menus.
- Hack out unexpected new storage space. Use formerly awkward spaces, such as under the stairs, for new storage areas.
- Fill a box with items you don’t love or use. Seal the box and place it in a closet. IF you haven’t opened the box in a year, donate it (unopened) to charity.
With a new season approaching, now is the perfect time to start fresh and de-clutter your home.
